WBUQ announces scholarship winner
WBUQ 91.1 FM has announced the scholarship winner for the Jeff Smith Memorial "Most Promising DJ" scholarship award.
Steve Sodergren, a senior at Bloomsburg University, received the annual award. Sodergren, a Mass Communications major, has been at DJ at WBUQ for two years.
The "Most Promising DJ" award was established by Smith’s mother and stepfather, Cheryl and John Motko, after Smith was killed in a car accident on October 4, 1997 in Erie while visiting friends at Edinboro University. The $500 scholarship is part of the $25,000 donation Smith’s family made to the University.
"We are pleased and honored to be able to carry on the memory of Jeff Smith with this scholarship," said Greg Albert, Specialty Director for WBUQ.
"Steve is a great asset to the WBUQ staff. His leadership and responsibility show through in his work," Albert said."He puts on a quality show every week."
Sodergren will use the scholarship to help defray the costs for a summer six-credit movie production course.
"I feel very lucky to be recognized with this scholarship," Sodergren said. "The radio station has been a great experience for me. I’ve met a lot of great friends, gotten some real-world experience, and had a lot of fun in the process."
Throughout Sodergren’s two-year career with WBUQ, he has played metal and RPM music. Sodergren plays RPM music on his Friday shows, called Electro-Freeze, from 12 to 2 PM.
